My Iris Patch
Until I came to the US I never had seen an Iris nor did I know that
there were so many varieties of them. Another thing that has fascinated me is how they grew in bunches or patches and just kept on spreading. Well, going through more of my stashes I found a few of the iris flowers that I had stitched out as samples for the Shaded Florals collection. There was nothing I could do with just a few of them so I went ahead and started stitching out more thinking I would make a full size quilt. Well, looking through my stash of fabrics, I could not find same material so I stitched (barely managed) enough to make a dozen blocks. What does one do with a dozen 5″x7″ blocks? A lot of cushion covers but I didn’t really want to upset dh any more. He thinks I have a freaky desire for creating quilts and cushions.
Well, this is where I opened up the EQ5 again and started to play around. As all the iris were stitched using the various shades of green and purple I pulled out all the batiks I had of those colors. Scanning those fabrics in I realised that I didn’t really have too much as far as the fabrics were concerned in my stash so it would have to be a long narrow wall quilt which could also be used as a crib quilt (the finished size was 47″x28″). I was extremely close and to my wonder the program calculated just right and I have now used up all the purples and green batiks pieces of fabrics I owned. As far as the pattern is concerned, I decided to stay traditional and used 2 1/2″ sashing and border around the blocks making sure that the same color did not meet in corners etc. The “Iris Patch” quilt came out pretty nice and I finished it off with a wide stippling all over.
