Instructions for stitching out the Cutwork.

Cutwork is really an interesting technique and adds dimension and lacy effect to any linen, garment. All my cutwork designs are created in similar methods. The cutting away of the fabric is done prior to the final stitching. Moreoever the cutwork stitches are designed in such a manner that they roll the cut edge of the fabric therefore eliminating the pokies from showing up. You do need the correct tools for cutwork.

Items required:

Linen napkin (I used the dinner roll napkin from All about Blanks)

Water soluble Stabilizer (I use water soluble vilene from Stirling Embroidery)

Sharp pointed scissors ( I use Kai sharps from Bullard Designs)

Straight pins, Spray starch and steam iron

Hoop water soluble vilene in the hoop. When doing cutwork I always only hoop the wss and never the fabric. Place the hoop in the machine.

Print out a template of your design. Making sure that you have marked the top of the template so as not to confuse the sides when placing on the linen. Pin the template to the fabric.

Place the linen(fabric) onto the hoop. Push the needle down button to bring the needle down to the center marking of your template. Your template has horizontal and vertical lines which mark the center. We want to make sure our needle is placed exactly on that center point.

You can either pin the fabric to the stabilizer as I have done making sure that the pins are out of the stitching area or you can use adhesive spray. I generally do not like to use adhesive spray when working with water soluble stabilizers.

As there is only one color in the design, you will see two colors on your machine screen. The first color is the guide to the cutting away of the fabric.

The cutaway areas will be pronounced in stitching by a heavy zigzag stitch. Push the start button on your machine and the machine will stitch out the cutaway areas.

Once the machine has stitched out the cutaway areas, remove the hoop from the machine only. DO NOT REMOVE THE FABRIC FROM THE HOOP. Place the hoop on a flat surface. Using sharp pointed scissors trim away the areas as shown by the arrows above. Make sure to only cut the fabric and not the wss. However is you do cut into the wss you can always place another piece on top.

After cutting away the cutwork areas, place the hoop back in the machine. As we are using only one thread you can use the same thread as the one which outlined the cutwork areas.

The machine will stitch out the design. Once the design is stitched out, remove pins and unhoop the stabilizer.

Trim the wss as close to the stitching on the back as possible. Now you may soak your linen in warm water to remove the wss. Once all the wss is gone from the fabric rinse well and let dry.

And you have a lovely cutwork design!
